Currently the Rakiura Museum’s many collection items are stored away in less than ideal conditions, with lack of space limiting items available for viewing. A new Heritage Centre will enable collections to be displayed and cared for more effectively so that they are enjoyed by all and preserved well into the future. We are going to build a multi purpose Heritage Centre that will not only interpret the Island’s history through interesting exhibits and audio visual displays but will also be an education and research centre.
The provision of general Stewart Island information services will increase visits to the Heritage Centre and make this a focal point for the township.
The building will be at the hub of the community as it will house other service centre operations such as an Information Centre and the S.D.C. Area Office - increasing local public awareness and enticing visitors to stay a while and browse the history of this fascinating island community.
