The development of a new $3.6m heritage centre on Stewart Island will create a regionally and nationally significant tourist attraction for visitors to learn about and experience the colourful history of Stewart Island / Rakiura and help provide information about all Stewart Island has to offer.
The Island’s rich heritage will be interpreted and displayed in an exciting way to encourage renewed interest and a sense of belonging for the many residents and descendants of Stewart Island / Rakiura families.
We are seeking donations towards this exciting project for Stewart Island / Rakiura which is now nearing completion. Stay in touch and help us on this journey to create an amazing heritage feature for Stewart Island / Rakiura.

Construction Underway
Work started in September 2018 preparing the site for building while materials and equipment were shipped from the mainland. Construction began in October with piles being driven successfully and subfloor framing was underway in November. Despite awful weather the team from Amalgamated Builders Ltd were able to finish laying the floor before Christmas 2018.

Since then it has been all go with steel framing completed in January, roof on in February, framing for exterior and internal walls completed in March and the first of building services underway.
